Stormy Night Support
Last updated: 11 September 2026
Stormy Night is an iPhone app that plays a storm that actually passes. It arrives while you fall asleep, breaks twice in the small hours, thins out before dawn, and hands the night over to birds, which keep going until you stop them. Tell it when dawn is and the whole storm stretches to fit.
Report a problem
Email me at alex@alexecollins.com. You do not need an account anywhere to do it, and I would rather have a short email than nothing.
Say what you did, what happened, and what you expected instead. These help:
- the iPhone and the version of iOS on it
- the version of Stormy Night from the App Store listing
- what you were listening through: the phone’s speaker, wired headphones, AirPods, a speaker over AirPlay
- roughly how far into the night it was, and what you had set as your dawn
What to expect
I write these apps on my own, in my own time, so this is not a support desk. I read every email. A reply usually takes a few days, and a fix takes longer than a reply.
Things that are working as intended
- Nothing much happens for the first twenty-five minutes. That is deliberate. You are falling asleep in those minutes, and anything with a shape to it would keep you awake.
- The thunder is quieter than you expect. Far-off thunder is filtered rather than turned down, which is the difference between a storm three miles away and a recording with the volume low.
- It never repeats. There is no loop to catch. The night is one designed arc with eleven layers mixed against it, so the seam you can hear in other apps is not there to find.
- The birds do not stop. The storm ends at your dawn and the chorus carries on until you stop it, because waking to sudden silence is its own alarm.
- The silent switch does not silence it. The app plays as audio rather than as a sound effect, which is what lets it keep going with the screen locked.
If the sound stops
Pulling headphones or AirPods out stops it on purpose, so the phone’s speaker does not start up on its own at three in the morning. Press play again.
Otherwise, check that nothing else on the phone has taken audio over, and that Stormy Night is the app playing in Control Centre. A call interrupts it and it starts again afterwards from where the night actually is by then, rather than from where it left off, because the storm is keyed to the clock rather than to how long it has been playing.
If the birds arrive at the wrong time
The whole storm is stretched to land at the dawn you set, so moving that time moves everything before it. Set it before you press play; the picker is there until you do.
Privacy
Stormy Night collects nothing, asks for no permissions, and makes no network connections. The privacy policy says what that means in full.
